Return to Question of the Week Highlights

I was at Disneyland last week and talked to a cast member at the Tiki Birds attraction. She said that this Walt Disney original was difficult to maintain, in need of refurbishment, and there was a chance that the attraction could be closed for good. Do you think Disneyland should keep the Tiki Bird attraction? What do you like or dislike about the Tiki Birds?

I used to love the Tiki Room when I was a child. It was one of my favorite attractions at Disneyland. But when I went to it last year (2002), I found it old and tired. It bored my son to tears. Some of the mouths didn't move anymore. With all the advances since the 1950s, the Tiki Room was just old and tired. It made me sad to sit in there. When I went to DL in December 2003, we had a pineapple whip but didn't bother with the Tiki Room. I think they either need to bring it up into the 21st century or replace it with something else from polyneasia. I would HATE to have the pineapple whips go. They are FABULOUS!

OH NO! I LOVE the Tiki Birds! In fact, that is one of the things I have to do when I go to Disneyland this year. We are usually at WDW, but this year DH has a conference in San Diego, so we are taking some extra time to go up to Disneyland. I told everyone in the family that the Tiki Birds are tops on my list to see. I miss the 'old' show that was replaced at WDW (although the new one is cute too, I wish they could do both). I believe (but I could be wrong) that DL still have the old Tiki Room show, and we are GOING! So I hope they keep it! I would hate to see it go!

I have never been a fan of the Tiki Birds. I remember on my first trip to Disney World in the early 80's with my younger sister we laughed at how outdated the show appeared even then compared to the attractions at Epcot. But last week I took the "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" tour at Disneyland and I learned some of the history of the attraction. It was one of Walt's favorites. The version at Disneyland is also the original one. Walt first intended the Tiki Birds attraction to be a restaurant! (in fact there is a unused but functional kitchen as part of the Tiki Birds Disneyland building). So I would vote now to keep the Tiki Birds. As the years go by we are losing more and more of the old attractions - I would like at least some of Walt's originals to stay at the Disney parks. Maybe the Tiki Birds could be converted to what Walt had originally intended - a fine dining restaurant inside Disneyland, with the show given every hour or so.

For those that don't know, there is plans to close the Tiki Bird attraction this Fall for a "refurbishment". There are a lot of theories what this might mean, but someone pretty high on the totem pole at Disney said if you want to experience the Tiki magic, you'd better do it quickly.
