Ship Inspection: Holland America Amsterdam June 2005
by Tim Larison, CLIA Master Cruise Counsellor (MCC)
From my Holland America clients I have often heard that they like
the smaller HAL ships better than the larger Vista class ships.
After seeing this ship, I can understand why!
While I like the Oosterdam and Westerdam, this ship had a cozier
feel to it and a more classic look (more wood grains and more decorative
when compared to the plain Vista class ships).
I particularly liked the category "S" suites with a Concierge Lounge
nearby. The cat "S" suites were very roomy and the Concierge Lounge
is a nice perk (with snacks, tv's, and a concierge host to help
with your arrangements). I have had several clients sail in cat
"S" balconies with rave reviews - I really liked this type of stateroom!
Sometimes HAL has specials on cat "S" balconies so that they are
not much more than regular balconies in price. The upgrade to a
cat "S" is definitely worth it.
We also had a yummy lunch (hosted by HAL) in the Amsterdam dining
room. If this lunch was indicative of the food served during a typical
7 night sailing, I would rate the food as excellent.
