Travel Insurance is a good thing!
by Tim Larison
Imagine that you’ve been planning a magical Disney cruise for your family for 18 months. Then 6 days before your cruise you are rushed to the hospital for an unexpected surgery, and you are unable to go on the cruise!
Or you have a cruise planned, then a few days before your cruise your father dies and you have to cancel the cruise.
Or you have been looking forward to a Mediterranean cruise for 2 years, then the day before you are scheduled to leave, an unexpected health problem comes up and your doctor says you can’t go on the cruise!
The above three scenarios recently happened to clients or friends of mine. Fortunately they all had travel insurance, so they will be reimbursed for their last minute cancellations.
I strongly recommend travel insurance for all vacations, and especially for cruise vacations. The penalties for cancelling a cruise just before departure are severe (100% penalty if cancelled 7 days or less for most cruise lines). Even if you are healthy and you say to yourself “I am going on this trip no matter what!” you never know when an unexpected event can occur.
Before I was a travel agent I never used to get trip insurance for my family’s trips. Now I always do! In working with clients I see too many things that can go wrong that results in a cancellation, and I strongly suggest insurance to all my clients.
