Snapshot Story: High Seas Scrabble

scrabble1Screen Shot 2016-06-11 at 2.28.18 PMSometimes the most memorable times on a cruise are those simple moments with family members.  On our cruise last month I played Scrabble with sons Josh and Andrew on at “at sea” day.  As we were playing I remembered, “we played Scrabble before on a cruise”.  Sure enough I looked back at our old cruise pictures and found a cruise Scrabble photo from 12 years earlier.  We were seated in the same positions!

Calgary – Gateway to the Canadian Rockies

This is the concluding post from Tim Larison from familytravelgurus.com on his visit to the province of Alberta, Canada in March, 2016.

winsportWhen I visited Canada 27 years ago we flew into Calgary, picked up our rental car, and immediately drove 1 1/2 hours to Banff to start our Canadian Rockies vacation.  On my 2016 trip I learned that Calgary is not a city to ignore – it has its own treasures to explore.

My favorite Calgary attraction was the WinSport Winter Sports Institute where Canadian athletes train for the Olympics.

figureskateWe had the opportunity to tour this massive sports complex.  I especially enjoyed watching this figure skating pair working with their coach on one of the many WinSport ice rinks.  They floated so effortlessly over the large ice surface.

skihillWinSport has its own ski facilities, including one of the world’s best half-pipe hills.  Our guide told us that US Olympian Shaun White rents the whole hill on some evenings for his own practice.

kidsNot just Olympic hopefuls use the WinSport facilities.  We saw a number of youth groups, like these junior skiers, ready to take to the slopes.  Our guide said tourists often sign up for ski lessons at WinSport before heading for mountain skiing at Lake Louise and other Canadian Rockies resorts.

bobsledsignThe bobsled course was closed on the day we visited.  Darn!  I was hoping to ride in a bobsled, with an expert pilot at the helm of course.  Our guide said these bobsled runs can exceed 60 miles per hour.  This thrilling ride is offered to tourists at WinSport in the winter months.

gretzkyWe saw an area honoring the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and other Canadian Olympians of the past.  This exhibit was particularly interesting to me (as I am a big hockey fan).  A short film we viewed telling the stories of past Olympians was also very well done.

towerAfter Winsport it was on to the Calgary Tower.  Built in 1968, this Calgary landmark offers some great views of the city and surrounding areas.

towerinsideThose afraid of heights need not worry.  The viewing area at the top of the tower is completely enclosed.

viewHere’s a view from the tower of the Saddledome and part of the Calgary skyline.

glenbowWe saw the Glenbow Museum below – a premier art museum that we were privileged to tour later that day.

gasalleyAnother museum we toured was Gasoline Alley at Calgary’s Heritage Park – a historical village giving visitors a glimpse into Canada’s past.

carsGasoline Alley had one of the best collections of antique cars I have seen anywhere.

dressupVisitors here can join in the fun and dress in period costumes for photo opportunities.

mallMy final stop in Calgary was at the massive CrossIron Mills – currently the largest enclosed factory outlet mall in North America.

mall2I spent a couple of hours here window shopping in the many stores and enjoying a bite to eat at the food court.

meGoodbye Calgary!  Goodbye World!  No, this scene isn’t quite what it appears to be. I had fun at the top of Calgary tower with the help of one of my group taking this picture far above the streets below.

But I was sad to say goodbye to Calgary and the Canadian Rockies at the end of a fun filled week of touring.  I do not want to wait 27 years this time for a return visit!

A Look at the Canadian Rockies Fairmont Resorts

This is another post from Tim Larison from familytravelgurus.com on his visit to the province of Alberta, Canada in March, 2016.

jasperentry27 years ago I visited the three Canadian Rockies Fairmont resorts with my wife Anne during our wonderful Canadian Rockies honeymoon.  In 2016 I had the opportunity to return with a group of travel agents from around the U.S.  I was to discover these resorts were just as magnificent as I remembered them.

jasperentry2First up: the Jasper Park Lodge.  We were greeted by a friendly doorman.  I was impressed with the level of service from all the Fairmont employees we met (our dinner hosts, wait staff, and adventure guides)

The Jasper Park Lodge is different than the other two Fairmont resorts we saw.  It features a main building with a pool, checkin area, a few guest rooms, and restaurant, with smaller guest cabins spread throughout the property. The Chateau Lake Louise and Banff Springs hotel, in contrast, each feature guest rooms in one large building. ... Read More

Wildlife Viewing in Canada

This is another post from Tim Larison from familytravelgurus.com on his visit to the province of Alberta, Canada in March, 2016.

canada wildlifeOn my weeklong trip to the Canadian Rockies I was surprised at the wildlife viewing opportunities – even in the winter.

buffalo3My first opportunity to view wildlife was at Elk Island National Park near Edmonton.  Elk Island has one of the largest remaining buffalo herds in North America (or a more accurate term – a North American Bison herd).  Here the park rangers gave us an interesting overview of the bison.  I learned  that there were over 30 million bison in the 1800’s.  Through unmanaged slaughter for their hides this number was sadly reduced to 1000 over the course of about 70 years.  A reserve like Elk Island keeps these magnificent animals protected from hunters.

buffalomeThe park rangers advised us not to take a selfie here – you never know when a bison is going to charge!  So I had one of my fellow travelers take this picture instead.  “You aren’t going to outrun a bison,” our guide explained, “they can run faster that Usain Bolt!”

sheep1As we drove from Edmonton to Jasper our driver spotted a group of big horn sheep right by the highway.

sheep2I’ve never seen big horn sheep at this close a vantage point!  I took this picture from about 30 feet away.  “Don’t worry, they won’t bother you,” our driver said.  I was amazed how these animals could balance themselves on the narrow, rocky mountain edges.

deerAs we continued our drive we saw these deer near the highway.  The sight of people did not scare them away – in fact they seemed curious about our presence.

elkOnce settled in the town of Jasper I didn’t expect to see any more animals.  Wrong!  Elk were present at different spots around town – like these by the railroad station.

We had some amazing wildlife views during non-peak hours.  Our guide said the best wildlife viewing opportunities are in the early morning or just before sunset.

In 2017 all the Canadian parks will be free to enter to celebrate Canada’s 150 year anniversary.  I am already planning a return trip, in the summer this time, to see even more animals (such as the hibernating bears)
